I: Indebtedness

Dear Suresh Uncle,

I write this letter to inform you that I have cleared my Chartered Accountancy examinations, that too in the first attempt. Also I have secured the All India third rank in the same. This wouldn’t have been possible if you had not visited our house a year ago. I am indebted to you for the huge part you played in my success.

When you had visited us last time, I had just cleared my second stage exams and was gearing up for the last and final run. To boost up my confidence and improve my morale, I had made a name board proclaiming, ‘CA Divya Nadar’, and had hung it up on my door. This board flabbergasted you. ‘Do you think you can complete CA? How can you make such an audacious name board? Just because you have been passing till now, doesn’t mean you will pass now. The last exam is the toughest. It is not so easy for girls. God has made girls a bit dumber. Remove this board immediately, or else it will break your heart when you fail the exam.’

It did break my heart to hear you speak so. That was the day I realised I will prove you wrong. Each time my head drooped in my books, out of tiredness or boredom, I shook myself awake and looked at the name board. Your words echoed into my ears and fresh energy zipped through my blood. Nothing can equal the negative motivation you gave me. Now, the name board is true. Thank you.

Forever indebted,

Divya Nadar

Divya read the letter once again. It felt so good writing it. She tore up the letter and threw it in the dustbin. After all, she can’t stoop down to bark at barking dogs. She was a Chartered Accountant now.

  1. That's the right spirit to take criticism and she did a correct thing by not writing back. When her uncle hears from others that she has become a CA it will be like a slap on his face. Wonderful story :)

  5. Flabbergasted to read "God has made girls dumber" - even God's jaw dropped. Well done Divya and in not sending the letter you sent a bigger message.

  6. Spot on and powerful letter. I remember my father estranged and half blood sister once told my Dad, I will become a laborer. My Dad proved them wrong, reminded me of these words every now and then.
